Few groups captured the essence of 1980s popular music as well as The Bangles. The group that started in 1981 as a garage band with plenty of rough edges looking to emulate The Beatles and The Byrds became an emblem of all the decade ‘s musical excesses. By the mid- ’80s super-slick production, power ballads and synthesizers — not to mention plenty of big hair — accompanied the band ‘s rise to stardom.

Then in 1989, like an allegory for the era itself, The Bangles simply ceased to exist. The band broke up due to artistic differences as well as personality conflicts. In the 1990s, each Bangle went her separate way while the grunge backlash wiped out what was left of ’80s pop.

But another decade arrived. The 21st century brought back nostalgia and newfound appreciation for the synthesized sounds and supercharged hooks of the 1980s. And just like that The Bangles we ‘re back — writing, recording and playing live. Last Tuesday, buy tiffany rings, a concert DVD "Return to Bangleonia " was released and prompted a 16-date tour that brings The Bangles to the Orpheum Theatre on Friday. Bangles ‘ drummer and vocalist Debbi Peterson spoke about the return.

State Journal: Watching the band on DVD and hearing your commentary, it seems like everything is easier for you now. Is it?

Peterson: Well, Maturity helps things. It ‘s still work. You still have to work at it and you still have to work at the relationships. When you have kids you just go "wow " being in a band is so much easier. Having kids is quite a tough job. I think we all opened our minds a little and we figured out that we know what to do. You can say no to things. You can talk things out and you don ‘t have to get so uptight. Older and wiser and all that.

State Journal: The new DVD was shot in 2000. What ‘s been happening since then?

Peterson: In 1999, we started writing again together and then we went overseas in 2001. In 2004,tiffany bangles on sale, (bassist) Michael Steele left the band. She just wanted to do her own thing. We all have kids. We ‘re all moms, so we ‘ve been doing little batches of tours because it ‘s kind of hard to do the full-on eight-month tour. The DVD project has been in the works for years. We finally got it all together and got it out.

State Journal: So who is the new Bangle?

Peterson: Abby Travis. She ‘s been playing with us for a while now. She ‘s great. She adds a lot of rock to our set and is a total character. We really like her. She dresses up kind of kooky and is a really good bass player.

State Journal: There ‘s no mistaking a Bangles song when you hear it, yet you ‘ve never had a problem playing music written by others.

Peterson: We ‘ve always been into doing covers. We like to write our own songs — that ‘s the preference — but we also like a lot of old ’60s songs and we didn ‘t want to just shut the door on covering songs. It ‘s kind of worked out that most of the big hits are somebody else ‘s songs. But I think we personalized them quite well and made them our own.

State Journal: For the song "Going Down to Liverpool " the video is on YouTube and features a grumpy looking Leonard Nimoy, who directed the clip.

Peterson: That was hilarious. It was a thrill to work with Spock. He was very professional and very quiet. YouTube is amazing. There are things I hadn ‘t even seen before that fans had done years ago.

State Journal: Your husband is British and on the DVD ‘s commentary it sounds like you ‘ve picked up some of his accent.

Peterson: I tend to pick up accents pretty easy, so there might be a little British accent in there. When (her sister and Bangle guitarist) Vicki and I were growing up, we used to recite "Hard Day ‘s Night " so there ‘s probably a little bit of that, too.

State Journal: What can people expect at (Friday ‘s) show?

Peterson: Expect a really good time. Don ‘t expect little wimpy girls because we like to rock out with a lot of vocals and gnarly guitar playing.

IF YOU GO

What: The Bangles with The Bridges

Where: Orpheum Thatre, 216 State St.

–The future bandmates first met over the phone on Dec. 9, 1980 — one day after the death of John Lennon.

Alexis Bittar is putting one more shopping destination on New York’s downtown map.

The Brooklyn-based jewelry designer is opening his second store in late May on Bleecker Street, home to designer boutiques, upscale eateries and specialty store chains.

Bittar unveiled his Broome Street flagship in March 2004 and plans to open four more stores in the next five years in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and London. He may also add another New York location on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The new, tiffany jewellery, 350-square-foot space will feature Bittar’s signature Lucite bangles in eye-popping colors and handcrafted pearl and gold vermeil pieces that have helped him achieve a cultlike status among the costume jewelry set. Having started out selling his collections on the streets of SoHo 20 years ago, Bittar has grown into a designer whose jewelry wholesales in 600 stores worldwide, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Selfridges.

Like its other location, Bittar’s new store fuses antique touches and modern objects. Victorian wallpaper mixes with industrial pieces that showcase the jewelry, as well as works of art. Cherry blossoms adorn one wall – the inspiration for which was taken from a scene from the 1959 film "North by Northwest." With a dark gray rug sweeping the floor and oak veneer cases lining the walls, the store will evoke a homey feeling as opposed to the austere aesthetic that Bittar feels is dominating today’s retail climate. He claims the store is "one part bedroom, one part 1940s department store."

"I didn’t want to mimic the same store identity that’s been rolling out lately," Bittar said. "It seems like everyone is doing the ‘all-white Sheetrock’ look and it’s minimal to the point of boring. I want to keep the same fusion of antique and modern that my other store has, bracelets, but in a different way."

Bittar’s Broome Street store also juxtaposes the new with the old. The walls vary between stark Plexiglas and antique wallpaper. A lion-footed Victorian table dominates the center of the room.

"I want my customers to feel something special upon entering my stores, like they are stepping back in time," Bittar said.

According to sources outside of the company, his 13-year-old brand has estimated sales of about $25 million. Each year Bittar experiences double-digit growth and has just seen a record 30 percent sales increase from last spring into fall. He often collaborates with ready-to-wear designers, having done Michael Kors’ bold necklaces, rings and bangles for the designer’s spring show, as well as the bright, beaded pieces for Bryan Bradley’s Tuleh spring collection.

"I enjoy straddling the bridge between costume jewelry and high fashion," Bittar said. "I think it’s all about the high drama in jewelry today and about having an impact. On the sales end, tiffany money clips sale, we’re feeding this insatiable need right now."

Tara Silberberg, owner of Brooklyn jewelry store The Clay Pot, is known for featuring independent, under-the-radar brands. She has carried Alexis Bittar since he began wholesaling the line.

"Alexis has really grown in such interesting ways over the years, tiffany bracelet," Silberberg said. "Part of it is the strong fashion direction he takes, but he always does basics and favorites, so it’s a good combination that hits a wide age bracket. I recently sold one of his Lucite pins to a 90-year-old woman. He is so inventive and creates a big range for lots of people to enjoy. You’ve got the fashion girls and the grandmas. It’s amazing to me."

Bittar is also at the fore of a costume jewelry moment that is extending from the runway to retail. Fashion houses such as Balenciaga and Lanvin are delving into the category in great numbers and with the threat of a recession looming, the fashion jewelry market is still thriving.

"I think especially when times get tough, people love this kind of jewelry," Silberberg said. "With the metal market so crazy, fine jewelry is outrageously expensive and it’s going to definitely impact retailers this coming winter. So I sense that those in the midrange – if they can capture that and can have a customer for that – will do well. People are looking to not break the bank and still look good. And the runway backing is going to make a big difference."

Bittar doesn’t seem to mind the increasing competition in the marketplace. He managed to bring his eccentric, tiffany bangles on sale, colorful brand into the fray during a time when minimalism was a key trend and bright Lucite bangles were not exactly lauded.

"Costume jewelry is a cottage industry that has been growing heavily over the past five years," Bittar said. "I remember in the Nineties, buyers would ask, ‘Is jewelry still happening?’ But now, young girls are experiencing it for the first time and they love it. Older women want to know if it’s OK to pile on that next bangle and it is right now."

Most people probably don’t think of the origins of drag racing — just that it’s a fun sport to watch on television.

But the beginning days of drag racing is a vivid, exciting memory for Coarsegold resident Bob Keith, tiffany rings for sale, one of the first Americans to introduce the sport to England and Australia in the 1960s.

"I had always been interested in cars since I was a kid," Keith said. "When I went to high school, I heard about drag racing. I got hooked the first time I went."

Keith, almost 72 years-old, said his parents were poor, so he alone funded his newfound interest. His dad did give him his first car though — a cherry 1949 Ford that he raced to its limits.

Keith wanted to be an auto teacher but dropped out of San Jose City College after two years to work for a Chevrolet dealer and bought himself a 1957 Chevy.

Many young men did street racing back then, Keith said, tiffany key rings sale, but it wasn’t safe and some died in those races. Keith decided he didn’t want a part of that.

"I devoted myself to racing at drag strips," he said.

Keith saw an article in Hot Rod Magazine in 1963 on a new dragster developed by Sir Sydney Allard of England.

Keith was immediately interested and sent a letter to Allard. Because the sport was new, Keith said Allard wanted exhibition runs to introduce drag racing to England.

Keith said Wally Parks of the National Hot Rod Association was putting together a drag race team to go to England, and Allard suggested Keith be a member.

"It was because of his great personality and his involvement with the NHRA," said longtime friend Gil Rothweiler, who created a single-lobe roller camshaft — part of the engine that operates the engine’s valves — for Keith’s dragster.

"They had a unique vehicle, and that’s why the NHRA wanted them to go to England," Rothweiler said of Keith and his sponsors.

The team, consisting of 1964′s top drag racing names and 10 drag racers, toured across England. There were no drag strips, Keith said, tiffany Pendants on sale, so they raced on World War II airstrips with 30,000 to 40,000 spectators at each meet.

"It was a very successful tour," Keith said.

The team returned to England in 1965 but took only dragsters.

Keith received another call from Parks in 1966 saying that the Australians wanted him to be part of the U.S. Drag Team and help introduce the sport in Australia.

With the help of sponsor Courtesy Chevrolet of San Jose, Keith had the first big-block Chevrolet with a super charger that increased the dragster’s power. He took it out for only four test runs before loading it onto a ship for Australia.

Keith raced the car for more than two months in Brisbane, tiffany ring, Melbourne and Sydney, and it never had a failure. It was the first American car to race on Australian soil, Keith said.

While in Australia, Keith found something even more interesting than dragsters. He met Australian Lee Cummine, and they had a whirlwind romance. They met in 1966 and were married in 1967.

"Soon after we left, England and Australia began importing American dragsters," Keith said. "The Aussies were characters, tiffany clearance, and they treated us like kings. It was quite an experience and a lot of fun. We went 200 mph over chuckholes and water on World War II landing strips."

While at the salt flats in Utah in 2008, Rothweiler said he and Keith met an Australian man who recalled seeing Keith race at surfers paradise in 1966.

Keith said he was amazed that 45 years after visiting Australia, he talked to people who had seen him race in 1966.

Lex Swane of Willowbank Raceway in Queensland discovered that Keith had parts of the original dragster and in 2008 offered to finance a restoration. Keith is rebuilding his 1965 dragster to donate to an Australian drag racing museum under construction.

Kent Fuller of Rancho Cordova and Arnold Chaves of San Jose — both helped build the original dragster — are helping with the restoration.

"I’ve scoured the world looking for the right parts to make it exactly the same as it was in ’66," Keith said. "The car will be very authentic when it’s done."

Rothweiler said of Keith, "He’s a gentleman and just unbelievable. He’s like our own family."

Keith’s racing past has been included — along with other historical drag racing figures — in the book "Crazy Horses: The History of British Drag Racing," released in England in May. Keith traveled to England for the book signing at the Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire.

There were 35,000 people at that race, a lot of them just there for the book signing, Keith said. Books ran out before the day was over, he said.

The book will be released in the fall in the United States. Keith will be in Bakersfield in October for the first U.S. signing.

After a blistering 2009, corporate-bond markets are set for a more sedate 2010. No longer obviously cheap, the market faces a number of hurdles. But that doesn’t mean investors should write off corporate bonds as last year’s fad. Technical and fundamental forces suggest corporate bonds could keep running a while longer.

For a start, corporate-bond investors may have less to fear than their government-bond counterparts from central bankers reducing the extraordinary support that fueled 2009′s sharp rally in risk assets. While government bond supply is set to rise as central banks ease back on quantitative and credit-easing measures, tiffany watche, pushing yields higher, tiffany ring, cash-rich corporations are expected to reduce their borrowing in 2010. Net nonfinancial supply could fall by 30% in the U.S. and 25% in Europe, according to Barclays Capital.

Meanwhile, cheap tiffany cuff Links, corporate bonds are set to throw off record amounts of cash in absolute terms.

The investment-grade euro-denominated bond market generates an average of 50 billion euros ($71.9 billion) a quarter in interest and principal payments for the next two years, according to Deutsche Bank, meaning 400 billion euros will be available for reinvestment. The picture is similarly rosy in dollars and sterling.

Meanwhile, the importance of corporate bonds as a funding mechanism has gained wider appreciation as a result of the crisis.

The continued need for banks to reduce the size of their balance sheets means policy makers are likely to seek to support the corporate-bond market as a key alternative source of funding, tiffany necklaces sale, particularly in Europe. Also, executives are likely to remain protective of their credit ratings, meaning bond investors may still have the upper hand over their equity counterparts.Default rates are expected to drop sharply in 2010.

Of course, investors will have to adjust their return expectations. In 2009, U.S. investment-grade corporate bonds returned 19.4%, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Europe turned in 15.1%. Junk-bond returns were even more startling: 57% for U.S. high-yield and 74.5% for euro high-yield.

That performance can’t be repeated. Rising government bond yields already have started to take their toll. A sharp rise in Treasury yields in December means U.S. investment grade bonds have returned minus-1.27% in a month, even as spreads continued to tighten.

The best trade might be to focus on the relative performance of corporate bonds versus government bonds, thanksgiving jewelry, rather than on total returns. After all, among the biggest risks for corporate bonds is higher government-debt yields.

One option is to hedge overall interest-rate risk in 2010 and bet that the credit spread between free-spending sovereigns and thriftier corporations continues to narrow.

Mansfield (0-3) pulled even midway through the opener on Amber Oxford’s ace. But a kill by Brittany Griffin helped the Airedalettes pad their lead to 18-13. Alma still led 23-18 when Mansfield clawed its way to within 23-21 on a kill and an ace by Marisa Hattabaugh. Griffin then put the game away with a kill.

Another kill by Griffin helped the Airedalettes extend their lead to 17-10 in the second game.

Handsome has trotted all over the county.

The small mixed-breed dog was first found in Blacksville as a stray, and taken to Monongalia County Canine Adoption Center on River Road. Last night, bangles, he escaped and made it all the way to South Pierpont Road overnight.

Each time, rings, Handsome found his way to someone willing to help him.

First was Kate Fickey. She saw the dog roaming around her Blacksville neighborhood.

"He was one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever come in contact with. He jumped right in my car," said Fickey, a retired Preston County school teacher.

Fickey kept Handsome at her house for a few days while she searched her neighborhood looking for his home. Although she quickly fell in love with him, she didn’t have enough room to keep him with her other dogs — so she took him to Monongalia County Canine Adoption Center.

There, Manager Dana Johnson said she’d do everything in her power to find the little dog a new home.

But Handsome might not have known her intentions were good. Wednesday night, he escaped.

Johnson speculates a shelter employee didn’t fully shut the latch on the gate of a fence out back. The dogs are kept in kennels that open up to a fenced-in yard so they can go outside.

When Johnson came in Thursday morning and saw he was gone, she was devastated.

"He’s such a nice boy. It made me sick," she said.

Two other dogs got loose, but were found around the adoption center. Handsome, however, was long gone.

His story doesn’t end there though — it shifts to the area around the Glenmark Centre.

On Thursday morning, a group of good Samaritans spotted Handsome roaming about — trotting with what seemed like a purpose.

Though the people didn’t know each other, they coordinated their efforts to rescue Handsome from busy traffic on South Pierpont Road.

Rodney Kovach, a general contractor working at a nearby construction site,Atlas charm bracelet, noticed the little dog, and slowly drove behind him with his flashers on to keep him from getting hit.

"I saw him walking up the road and I wanted to try to catch him," Kovach said. Some others stopped to help him.

Amy Fisher saw Kovach and two women trying to catch the dog so she pulled over.

"When I got out of my car, I called him and he stopped and just came running toward me and jumped into my car," Fisher said. "It was too easy."

Coincidentally, Fisher happened to have a can of dog food in the back of her car that had fallen out of a grocery bag. The group fed Handsome and one of the women decided to take him home.

The Dominion Post

learned about the story and checked with Johnson to see if any similar dogs had been reported missing lately.

Johnson quickly knew exactly who the reporter was talking about.

"I’m just so glad he’s safe!" she exclaimed.

Everyone involved in Handsome’s tale felt the same way.

Kovach was running late for an appointment when his wife phoned him to ask where he was.

Kovach said, "My wife said, tiffany, ‘Don’t leave until you get that dog taken care of.’ "

Johnson was shocked Handsome made it so far in less than 12 hours. It was about a seven-mile trek, according to Mapquest.

Even though eBay is the world’s most popular internet trading portal, more Thais should be making use of the e-commerce site, says a local online merchant.

Currently there are about 34 million items being traded on the website, but successful valentines gifts Thai eBay trader Rattanachai Thapanaphong says eBay still has much more to offer.

The 27-year-old trainer runs courses to help Thai sellers analyse and develop their eBay professional trading skills at his Benzio School.

Traders must first determine which product they want to sell through eBay. More detail is then needed to successfully tap or establish a niche market.

“For example, if you want to sell garments, you have to be specific whether it is sleepwear, baby clothes or traditional Thai costumes,” said Mr Rattanachai. “You can sell any type of garment but it must be unique.”

He recommends beginners do plenty of research on eBay and study their competition and the market.

“If there are fewer than 1,000 pieces offered on the site, there are certainly opportunities for selling in that category,” said Mr Rattanachai.

From the keyword “Thai”, Mr Rattanachai found total sales of US$290,561 (9.66 million bangles) through eBay last month, up from $251,550 in October and $159,989 in September.

A gemstone and jewellery trader from Chanthaburi set the Thailand record for eBay by selling products worth a combined $108,362 in one month.

Mr Rattanachai said there were great opportunities for selling Thai religious items online such as kuman thong (child-ghost), nang kwak (beckoning women), Buddha amulets and san phra phum (resident deity).

Gold and silver jewellery, gemstones, old CDs, branded old watches, collectible car models and old books are also popular with foreign buyers.

Mr Rattanachai said buyers from different countries shop for different products and sellers should study the behaviour of their target customers. Brand-name or pirated items were not recommended, he added.

Product information can only be posted in English on eBay. But Mr Rattanachai said this should not be too great a barrier for Thais.

Choosing the right product and presenting it attractively on the site are more important.

“If you sell a T-shirt with dragon pattern, you should show clearly the dragon in detail and tell the history of the dragon,” he said.

When calculating profits and costs, sellers should translate the cost into US dollars then add 15 percent more for the eBay sales fee.

Traders should not embark on a price-cutting strategy by setting the minimum bidding price too rings as it would destroy the overall market, he said.

“You should know the price of the same product including shipping cost on eBay, so you can set your overall price a bit lower,” he advises. “You can also set a higher price if your product is really outstanding or you have a better presentation to show the item.”

Thailand Post is the most convenient way to ship items as the rates are reasonable and it has a tracking system. But sellers may need to buy insurance coverage for expensive items, he said.

The rowdy Phillies fan who got tossed from a playoff game in October, stopped on his way tiffany and co out to fill out a job application, and then allegedly stole an envelope containing three World Series rings, failed to appear for his court hearing today.

For that, Matthew Mervine, 22, of Berlin Borough, Camden County, got slapped with a bench warrant.

But he somehow figured out he was supposed to be in Municipal Court at 11th and Wharton in South Philadelphia and went to his local police station to let them know he didn’t mean to blow off his criminal case, said Capt. Laurence Nodiff, commander of South Detectives.

Philadelphia police were contacted and they told Mervine to show up at the Criminal Justice Center in bangles the next few days and schedule a new court date, Nodiff said.

What, if any, penalty he might face is uncertain. Often, bench warrants are lifted and the case proceeds if the person shows up with a reasonable excuse.

Nodiff said he didn’t know what excuse Mervine had for failing to appear.

Mervine could not be reached for comment.

On Oct. 8, Mervine and some friends were ejected from Game 2 of the playoff series against the Colorado Rockies for being obnoxious.

On his way out, police said, Mervine decided to go to the Phillies offices to apply for a job. After filling out an application — with his name and address — Mervine noticed a manila envelope with the name of a former Phillies player on a counter, police said. He then swiped it, police said. The envelope contained three 2008 World Series rings worth $1,100 each. The rings are different from the $11,000 rings given to players, coaches and other employees.

The case was easy to solve: the application contained Mervine’s name and address, and the entire episode was caught on video. Within a few hours, police arrested Mervine at his home on Coleman Road, and charged him with theft and receiving stolen property.
