West Virginia University issued the following news release:

A West Virginia University researcher has been honored for her exploration of customer satisfaction among African-American women.

Nora M. MacDonald, professor of fashion design and merchandising at WVU, Shirley A. Lazorchak, associate professor and program coordinator of marketing at California University of Pennsylvania, and Kristi M. Currie, currently pursuing a certificate in image consulting from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, were recognized by the Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal for their article, "African-American Women’s Satisfaction with the Design and Marketing of Ready-to-Wear Clothing."

The article was selected as the top FCSRJ article in the apparel, textiles, and merchandising category and was a runner-up for the FCSRJ 2009 Outstanding Article Award. Articles were evaluated based upon the following criteria: originality of the topic, standards of research design and methodology, and potential to make a lasting contribution to theory and/or practice in family and consumer sciences.

MacDonald, Lazorchak, tiffany earrings, and Currie conducted a study to assess older African-American women’s perceptions of how well their clothing needs were being met. Thirty-two African-American women from the Charleston, W.

Va., area participated in the study, which indicated dissatisfaction with the portrayal of African-American females in targeted advertisements and the fit of clothing. The African-American market has increased dramatically as a percentage of the United States population, with purchasing power estimated at more than $800 billion.

The collaboration gave MacDonald the opportunity to catch up with two former students. Lazorchak (’79) and Currie (’00) both earned their undergraduate degrees in Fashion Design and Merchandising from WVU.

Scientists discuss in ‘Young girl presenting with heart failure 5 years after laparoscopic appendectomy (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Heart-Failure.html> Heart Failure). Case report of an ilio-iliac AV fistula’ new findings in heart failure. According to recent research from Munich, Germany, "Secondary arteriovenous (AV) fistulae following appendectomy are very rare. REPORT: We report the case of a 15-year-old girl suffering from progressive heart failure and sub-acute abdominal pain caused by an ilio-iliac AV fistula 5 years after a complicated appendectomy."

"The vessel-wall defects were closed by open surgery and the aneurysmatic iliac vein was gathered. Open fistula repair should be recommended to healthy and/or young patients, especially when they are not fully-grown," wrote A. Kuehnl and colleagues, Technical University Munchen.

The researchers concluded: "Endovascular treatment should be the therapy of choice in high-risk patients or patients with local contraindications against open surgery."

Kuehnl and colleagues published their study in European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (Young girl presenting with heart failure 5 years after laparoscopic appendectomy. Case report of an ilio-iliac AV fistula. European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, 2010;40(1):107-9).

James E. Stein, MD, vice chair, Department of Surgery at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, is featured in People magazine’s August 2nd issue as the magazine revisits a story from 2003 when Dr. Stein led a 60-member medical and surgical team in a rare, highly complex and historic procedure to separate twin girls, Macey and MacKenzie Garrison. In this issue, tiffany earrings, on newsstands now, People shares how the girls are living – "A Beautiful Life."

Surgeons began the nearly 24-hour operation Wednesday morning September 10, 2003, delicately separating a number of the girls’ internal organs. When media originally covered this story, tiffany bracelets, the identity of the babies was confidential and the babies were simply known as Baby A and Baby B (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Childrens-Hospital.html> Childrens Hospital).

The identical twins were each born with one normally developed leg, and they shared a conjoined leg. Doctors used that leg to replace tissue and bone in the girls’ pelvic regions. The large intestine could not be divided and went to one twin. Surgeons also performed a liver separation and did reconstruction on the girls’ urinary and reproductive tracts. The girls were born with a fraternal triplet sister who developed normally. The case marks the second known instance of conjoined twins born as part of a triplet set, according to the hospital.

Dr. Stein has been an attending pediatric surgeon in the Division of Pediatric Surgery of the Department of Surgery at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles since 1996. He is an assistant professor of surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. New investigation results, ‘Prevalence of acquired melanocytic naevi in Brazilian schoolchildren,’ are detailed in a study published in Clinical & Experimental Dermatology (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Dermatology.html> Dermatology). According to recent research from Pernambuco, Brazil, "The prevalence of acquired melanocytic naevi (AMN) is one of the most important known risk factors for malignant melanoma (MM) in homogeneous white populations. However, there are few studies on AMN in heterogeneous populations."

"Insight into the causes of AMN in heterogeneous populations in a country with intense ultraviolet radiation should lead to successful strategies in the prevention of MM. To evaluate the frequency and anatomical distribution of AMN and to observe the influence of environmental and constitutional variables. A cross-sectional study on the prevalence of AMN was performed on 1279 Brazilian schoolchildren, aged 2-8 years, according to an international protocol. Both girls and boys had the same number of AMN. The number of AMN was higher on sun-exposed body sites, such as shoulders, thorax/upper abdomen, face/ears and back. A high number of AMN was associated with lighter skin type, tiffany bracelets, greater sun exposure, age, number of sunburns and presence of freckles. In genetically predisposed people, the body-site distribution of AMN in a heterogeneous population (mixed ethnic backgrounds) is similar to that in a homogeneous population and has the same tendency toward potential proliferation of melanocytes in the presence of ultraviolet radiation. Strategies to reduce the incidence of MM should start at an early age. We believe that these findings will have a direct effect on concepts for preventive strategies," wrote S. Yarak and colleagues, Federal University, Department of Dermatology.

The researchers concluded: "Studies in different populations may serve as a starting point for research into the mechanism underlying increasing rates of AMN."

Yarak and colleagues published their study in Clinical & Experimental Dermatology (Prevalence of acquired melanocytic naevi in Brazilian schoolchildren. Clinical & Experimental Dermatology, 2010;35(6):581-7).

According to recent research from Beijing, People’s Republic of China, "Lingual dermoid cysts are squamous epithelial-lined cavities with variable numbers of skin adnexae in the capsule and are rare entities in the head and neck (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Cysts.html> Cysts). We discuss the presentation, possible aetiologies and the surgical management of these lesions and report on the ninth lingual dermoid cyst as an illustrative example, the first to be excised by laser."

"An extensive literature search was undertaken. We present the case of a 4-month-old di-zygotic twin girl with a firm midline anterior tongue dermoid cyst. Its extent was defined by magnetic resonance imaging. The cyst was excised using the CO2 laser via an extended median sagittal glossotomy approach. Lingual dermoid cysts most commonly present in early childhood or adolescence and are located in the anterior two thirds of the tongue. Eight lingual dermoid cysts have been reported, all of which were surgically excised, using varying techniques, and no recurrences have been reported. Our patient recovered well and was extubated immediately post-operatively. However, feeding was delayed for 48 h post-operatively due to pain, tiffany bangles, requiring opiate analgesia. The tongue healed completely with only a small indent in the tip. Treatment of these lesions consists of complete surgical excision. We propose that the midline sagittal glossotomy incision using the CO2 laser offers surgical precision, superior haemostasis and wound healing and minimal post-operative oedema," wrote H.X. Baoyin and colleagues, Tsinghua University.

The researchers concluded: "The involvement of the sensitive tongue tip in this approach may be its one drawback, however this may be compensated for with appropriate postoperative analgesia."

Baoyin and colleagues published their study in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics (Capturing near earth objects. Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2010;10(6):587-598).

According to a study from Lublin, Poland, tiffany bangles, "It has been suggested that polymorphic variations in estrogen receptors (ERs) genes may have an impact on linear growth of girls during puberty (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Endocrinology.html> Endocrinology). The aim of the study was to investigate whether height at menarche is influenced by Pvull and Xbal polymorphisms of the ER alpha gene."

"The study population consisted of 127 healthy girls, who were observed from premenarcheal period at six monthly intervals, until menarche occurred in all participants. Anthropometric measurements were taken at each visit and their values at menarche were calculated using centile curves drawn individually for each subject. Pvull and Xbal ER alpha gene polymorphisms were evaluated with RLFP-PCR. The age at menarche was not related to ER alpha gene polymorphisms. Girls with pp genotype were at menarche on average 3.2 cm shorter than PP homozygotes and in addition xx homozygotes were shorter than subjects with XX and Xx genotypes: 3.0 cm and 3.9 cm respectively. with px haplotype were, at the onset of the first menstrual period, from 2.3 cm to 3.1 cm shorter than carriers of other haplotypes. The leg length-to-height ratio at menarche was lower in xx homozygotes than in Xx heterozygotes and lower in px haplotype in comparison to Px and pX haplotypes carriers. Corresponding associations were observed at the final visit," wrote B. Kulikrechberger and colleagues, Medical University of Lublin.

The researchers concluded: "Height at menarche is influenced by the ER alpha gene polymorphism. (J. Endocrinol. Invest."

Delmont, Slickville jewelry suspects surrender

Uncategorized

The 42-year-old Delmont woman who told police she had been sharing a tent in the woods with her stepfather for a week as they tried to avoid arrest is behind bars.

Accused jewel thief Debra McAdams and her stepfather now face theft-related charges in at least four counties.

After disappearing after paying $75,tiffany key rings,000 in bonds two weeks ago, tiffany bangles, and facing charges in more cases, the combined bond McAdams would have to pay in order to be freed while awaiting trial is $220,000.

McAdams and her stepfather, Arthur T. McGuire Sr., 63, of Slickville, Salem Township, surrendered to Kiski Valley state police on Sunday. They spent Monday in various judicial proceedings involving theft-related charges in Tarentum and in Clarion and Erie counties.

McAdams told police she and her stepfather lived in a tent in the woods in Salem Township and at locations off Route 380 to avoid arrest.

They already had been arrested and released while awaiting trial for a $35,000 jewelry theft scam at a Washington Township antique store in May.

The pair faced several court proceedings Monday:

Both were arraigned on theft and other charges involving a $38,000 ring-swapping scam at Seita Jewelry in Tarentum last month.

Brackenridge District Judge Carolyn Bengel revoked McAdams’ $25,000 bond in that case. Because McAdams allegedly violated terms of that bond by threatening a witness, Bengel quadrupled McAdams’ bond in the Tarentum case to $100,000.

Bengel also arraigned McAdams on the charge of attempting to intimidate a witness, her stepsister. Bengel also set that bond at $100,tiffany bracelets,000.

Also on Monday, McAdams was arraigned for allegedly stealing loose diamonds from a store in Clarion.

Clarion police are charging McAdams with theft and possessing an instrument of crime — a cheap ring — that police allege McAdams secretly swapped for a valuable ring.

Bengel set the woman’s bond in the Clarion case at $10,000.

Earlier Monday morning, McAdams had a video arraignment by an Erie County district judge on charges originating there.

Erie state police are charging McAdams with theft by deception and conspiracy. She allegedly sold three of the stolen Seita rings to a store in Erie County.

Bond was set in that case at $10,tiffany earrings,000 unsecured.

After all of Monday’s court proceedings, both McAdams and McGuire were sent to the Allegheny County Jail. McGuire’s bond was set at $50,000. Preliminary hearings for both are scheduled this month.

Prosecutors say $16,500 was stolen in just nine da

Uncategorized

Two Allentown men who ran a check forgery ring using filched bank numbers and materials they could buy at an office supply store will spend up to five years in state prison.

Kenneth J. Hill and James A. Stevens stole thousands of dollars in just nine days last year before they were arrested in Atlantic City. Northampton County prosecutors said they used magnetic ink and blank checks to forge checks bearing stolen routing numbers they had somehow obtained.

"It only lasted nine days, but that’s because you got caught," Judge Craig Dally said Monday as he sentenced the men to 30 to 60 months in prison in separate hearings.

"This enterprise,Tiffany bracelets, while maybe not the most brilliant, had a level of sophistication to it," Dally said.

Hill, 45, and Stevens, 50, were uncovered in November after Valley National Group, a Hanover Township, Northampton County, financial advisory business, contacted authorities to say someone was illegally forging company checks and passing them at businesses.

A total of 11 victims were identified, with losses that reached $16,500,Tiffany Sets, said Assistant District Attorney Michael Filingo. Seized were computers, software and blank checks for counterfeiting, showing a level of planning, he said.

"There was momentum to this conspiracy," Filingo said.

The checks were passed in Northampton and Lehigh counties and in at least Atlantic City in New Jersey from late October to early November, prosecutors have said. Two other co-defendants have also been charged.

In May, Hill and Stevens pleaded guilty to five felony counts of forgery and four of conspiracy. Beyond the jail time, they will have restitution, two years of probation, and 500 hours of community service under Dally’s sentence.

Defense attorney James Connell, who represented Stevens, said the crime wasn’t as well thought out as might appear. While they forged the checks, they didn’t use fake identifications to cash them, he said.

"They used their own names," Connell said. "It’s almost like they wanted to get caught."

Both men are drug addicts, their attorneys said. Alexander Karam,Tiffany earrings, who represented Hill, said his client was using crack cocaine and living in his car under the Eighth Street bridge in Allentown.

"I’d just like to say how sorry I am for all I did," Hill told Dally.

"This is not something I would do when I was in my right mind," said Stevens, who claimed he had relapsed to drugs after his wife died and he was involved in a serious car accident.

Hill also faces a probation violation for a 2005 forgery conviction in Berks County. Co-defendants Amy K. Holbert, 36,Tiffany bangles, of Bethlehem and Charles R. Sona, 38, of Allentown have unresolved cases.

After pugilist Vijender Singh’s multi-crore endorsement deals, it’s the turn of women’s boxing sensation M.C. Mary Kom to step into the marketing arena,Tiffany Sets, albeit on a modest scale.

The diminutive four-time world boxing champion, tipped as India’s best medal hope in the 2012 London Olympics, is getting not one,Tiffany bracelets, but two sponsorship deals.

On Friday, nutrition company Herbalife India announced its tie-up with the Manipuri boxer, dubbed ‘Magnificent Mary’ for her superlative showing in the pin weight category (46 kg).

Sports management company Infinity Optimal Solutions (IOS),Tiffany rings, which represents the boxer, also revealed to Business Line that Sahara Group too has signed up Mary Kom and the deal will be made public shortly.

However, IOS officials did not disclose how much these deals were worth – though they admitted that 27-yearold’s brand value is far less than badminton star Saina Nehwal.

"In terms of visibility and brand image, women’s boxing is not as prominent as badminton, though if Mary Kom brings back the gold from the World Championship later this year, things could change," said Mr Neerav Tomar, Chief Executive Officer and founder of IOS.

The deceptively fraillooking Kom, who is a mother of twins, pulled no punches when she revealed her determination to bring home a medal from the London Olympics, where women’s boxing will be introduced for the first time.

However, since Mary Kom’s category is not included, she will have to bulk up and fight in the 48-kg light flyweight segment, which could prove to be a challenge.

Mary Kom is one of the few sporting stars handpicked by Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) for training support for the London Olympics. Founded by Geet Sethi and Prakash Padukone, tiffany, OGQ is a nonprofit sporting body set up with the aim of winning some golds for medalstarved India.

Even though women’s boxing is not an event at the CommonWealth Games this October in Delhi, Mary Kom has been named one of its six brand ambassadors – clearly proving the star boxer’s growing brand equity.
