‘Arranged marriages are back in fashion’

Uncategorized

While Bollywood is getting more and more adventurous in its portrayal of romances, celebrities are following a different route altogether. With Mahendra Dhoni’s secret marriage to a non-celebrity last month, and Vivek Oberoi plans to tie the knot with Priyanka Alva, a girl picked by his parents, the trend of conventional and "arranged marriages", as counsellors call them, seems to be coming back into fashion.

Dr Rajiv Anand, a counsellor says, tiffany, "Most marriages these days find it hard to finish five years. And a majority of these crumbling ties are so-called love marriages. Sadly and surprisingly,Bead bracelet, I come across a large number of youngsters who after a few years themselves realise that they made the wrong decision."

The illusion

Celebrities like Madhuri Dixit too have been married to people out of the media glare and have managed to maintain their relationship until now. Are the expectations from a ‘media marriage’ any different?

Dr Hiten Shah, a marriage counsellor says, "Celebrities want to feel like a normal person when they return home to their family. So if they are married to someone who doesn’t share the same publicity glare that they do on a regular basis, it helps differentiate the worlds for them."

So what is it about arranged marriages, which is causing them to make a comeback? "The fact that sometimes the young generation does not have the same objectivity about certain characteristics that parents can have. Vivek Oberoi has made a wise step in that direction and respected his parents’ decision," says Anand.

Open relations

Meanwhile, tiffany money clips, relationships like those of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan too are examples of how bonds based on love, and not marriage, can work. "Nothing is written in stone. Kareena and Saif have committed to each other verbally, and in the media, and yet manage to keep their relationship secure," says Shah.

For celebrities, an arranged marriage could provide the right balance. "A popular personality has a major part of his life outside his home, tiffany earrings," says Shah. "These people get married to partners who don’t have a public life, so they can nurture and care for them. If both the partners share that lifestyle, they would both feel deprived."

FASHION MARKETING RESEARCH EARNS HONORS

West Virginia University issued the following news release:

A West Virginia University researcher has been honored for her exploration of customer satisfaction among African-American women.

Nora M. MacDonald, professor of fashion design and merchandising at WVU, Shirley A. Lazorchak, associate professor and program coordinator of marketing at California University of Pennsylvania, and Kristi M. Currie, currently pursuing a certificate in image consulting from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, were recognized by the Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal for their article, "African-American Women’s Satisfaction with the Design and Marketing of Ready-to-Wear Clothing."

The article was selected as the top FCSRJ article in the apparel, textiles, and merchandising category and was a runner-up for the FCSRJ 2009 Outstanding Article Award. Articles were evaluated based upon the following criteria: originality of the topic, standards of research design and methodology, and potential to make a lasting contribution to theory and/or practice in family and consumer sciences.

MacDonald, Lazorchak, tiffany earrings, and Currie conducted a study to assess older African-American women’s perceptions of how well their clothing needs were being met. Thirty-two African-American women from the Charleston, W.

Va., area participated in the study, which indicated dissatisfaction with the portrayal of African-American females in targeted advertisements and the fit of clothing. The African-American market has increased dramatically as a percentage of the United States population, with purchasing power estimated at more than $800 billion.

The collaboration gave MacDonald the opportunity to catch up with two former students. Lazorchak (’79) and Currie (’00) both earned their undergraduate degrees in Fashion Design and Merchandising from WVU.

Published by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal publishes original research in all areas of family and consumer science concerned with the well-being of families and individuals, including areas such as human development and family studies; food and nutrition; family and consumer science education; personal finance and family economics; housing, equipment, and interior design; textiles, apparel and merchandising; and professional issues.

REPORT: We report the case of a 15-year-old girl suffering from progressive heart failure and sub-acute abdominal pain caused by an ilio-iliac AV fistula 5 years after a complicated appendectomy."

"The vessel-wall defects were closed by open surgery and the aneurysmatic iliac vein was gathered. Open fistula repair should be recommended to healthy and/or young patients, especially when they are not fully-grown," wrote A. Kuehnl and colleagues, Technical University Munchen.

The researchers concluded: "Endovascular treatment should be the therapy of choice in high-risk patients or patients with local contraindications against open surgery."

Kuehnl and colleagues published their study in European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (Young girl presenting with heart failure 5 years after laparoscopic appendectomy. Case report of an ilio-iliac AV fistula. European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, 2010;40(1):107-9).

James E. Stein, MD, vice chair, Department of Surgery at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, is featured in People magazine’s August 2nd issue as the magazine revisits a story from 2003 when Dr. Stein led a 60-member medical and surgical team in a rare, highly complex and historic procedure to separate twin girls, Macey and MacKenzie Garrison. In this issue, tiffany earrings, on newsstands now, People shares how the girls are living – "A Beautiful Life."

Surgeons began the nearly 24-hour operation Wednesday morning September 10, 2003, delicately separating a number of the girls’ internal organs. When media originally covered this story, tiffany bracelets, the identity of the babies was confidential and the babies were simply known as Baby A and Baby B (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Childrens-Hospital.html> Childrens Hospital).

The identical twins were each born with one normally developed leg, and they shared a conjoined leg. Doctors used that leg to replace tissue and bone in the girls’ pelvic regions. The large intestine could not be divided and went to one twin. Surgeons also performed a liver separation and did reconstruction on the girls’ urinary and reproductive tracts. The girls were born with a fraternal triplet sister who developed normally. The case marks the second known instance of conjoined twins born as part of a triplet set, according to the hospital.

Dr. Stein has been an attending pediatric surgeon in the Division of Pediatric Surgery of the Department of Surgery at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles since 1996. He is an assistant professor of surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. Delmont, Slickville jewelry suspects surrender

Uncategorized

The 42-year-old Delmont woman who told police she had been sharing a tent in the woods with her stepfather for a week as they tried to avoid arrest is behind bars.

Accused jewel thief Debra McAdams and her stepfather now face theft-related charges in at least four counties.

After disappearing after paying $75,tiffany key rings,000 in bonds two weeks ago, tiffany bangles, and facing charges in more cases, the combined bond McAdams would have to pay in order to be freed while awaiting trial is $220,000.

McAdams and her stepfather, Arthur T. McGuire Sr., 63, of Slickville, Salem Township, surrendered to Kiski Valley state police on Sunday. They spent Monday in various judicial proceedings involving theft-related charges in Tarentum and in Clarion and Erie counties.

McAdams told police she and her stepfather lived in a tent in the woods in Salem Township and at locations off Route 380 to avoid arrest.

They already had been arrested and released while awaiting trial for a $35,000 jewelry theft scam at a Washington Township antique store in May.

The pair faced several court proceedings Monday:

Both were arraigned on theft and other charges involving a $38,000 ring-swapping scam at Seita Jewelry in Tarentum last month.

Brackenridge District Judge Carolyn Bengel revoked McAdams’ $25,000 bond in that case. Because McAdams allegedly violated terms of that bond by threatening a witness, Bengel quadrupled McAdams’ bond in the Tarentum case to $100,000.

Bengel also arraigned McAdams on the charge of attempting to intimidate a witness, her stepsister. Bengel also set that bond at $100,tiffany bracelets,000.

Also on Monday, McAdams was arraigned for allegedly stealing loose diamonds from a store in Clarion.

Clarion police are charging McAdams with theft and possessing an instrument of crime — a cheap ring — that police allege McAdams secretly swapped for a valuable ring.

Bengel set the woman’s bond in the Clarion case at $10,000.

Earlier Monday morning, McAdams had a video arraignment by an Erie County district judge on charges originating there.

Erie state police are charging McAdams with theft by deception and conspiracy. She allegedly sold three of the stolen Seita rings to a store in Erie County.

Bond was set in that case at $10,tiffany earrings,000 unsecured.

After all of Monday’s court proceedings, both McAdams and McGuire were sent to the Allegheny County Jail. McGuire’s bond was set at $50,000. Preliminary hearings for both are scheduled this month.

Prosecutors say $16,500 was stolen in just nine da

Uncategorized

Two Allentown men who ran a check forgery ring using filched bank numbers and materials they could buy at an office supply store will spend up to five years in state prison.

Kenneth J. Hill and James A. Stevens stole thousands of dollars in just nine days last year before they were arrested in Atlantic City. Northampton County prosecutors said they used magnetic ink and blank checks to forge checks bearing stolen routing numbers they had somehow obtained.

"It only lasted nine days, but that’s because you got caught," Judge Craig Dally said Monday as he sentenced the men to 30 to 60 months in prison in separate hearings.

"This enterprise,Tiffany bracelets, while maybe not the most brilliant, had a level of sophistication to it," Dally said.

Hill, 45, and Stevens, 50, were uncovered in November after Valley National Group, a Hanover Township, Northampton County, financial advisory business, contacted authorities to say someone was illegally forging company checks and passing them at businesses.

A total of 11 victims were identified, with losses that reached $16,500,Tiffany Sets, said Assistant District Attorney Michael Filingo. Seized were computers, software and blank checks for counterfeiting, showing a level of planning, he said.

"There was momentum to this conspiracy," Filingo said.

The checks were passed in Northampton and Lehigh counties and in at least Atlantic City in New Jersey from late October to early November, prosecutors have said. Two other co-defendants have also been charged.

In May, Hill and Stevens pleaded guilty to five felony counts of forgery and four of conspiracy. Beyond the jail time, they will have restitution, two years of probation, and 500 hours of community service under Dally’s sentence.

Defense attorney James Connell, who represented Stevens, said the crime wasn’t as well thought out as might appear. While they forged the checks, they didn’t use fake identifications to cash them, he said.

"They used their own names," Connell said. "It’s almost like they wanted to get caught."

Both men are drug addicts, their attorneys said. Alexander Karam,Tiffany earrings, who represented Hill, said his client was using crack cocaine and living in his car under the Eighth Street bridge in Allentown.

"I’d just like to say how sorry I am for all I did," Hill told Dally.

"This is not something I would do when I was in my right mind," said Stevens, who claimed he had relapsed to drugs after his wife died and he was involved in a serious car accident.

Hill also faces a probation violation for a 2005 forgery conviction in Berks County. Co-defendants Amy K. Holbert, 36,Tiffany bangles, of Bethlehem and Charles R. Sona, 38, of Allentown have unresolved cases.

Police seize evidence from apartment of missing mo

Police collected samples of red stains along with personal belongings in a search of the South Richmond apartment shared by Tameka Claiborne and Michael Solomon, according to a search warrant.

Further details on the stains were not immediately available, but the inventory of items seized from the residence yesterday in the 700 block of Blandy Avenue included a pillow, a cigarette butt, clothing, a laptop computer and a purse.

Police fear that Claiborne, the mother of a 2-year-old boy found alone in a Chesterfield County apartment complex parking lot Tuesday night, may have been harmed. Solomon, tiffany earrings, her boyfriend, discount tiffany, is being sought as a person of interest in the case.

Claiborne’s family members have said the key to finding her is to locate Solomon.

Earlier today, tiffany, a friend of Solomon said he and and Claiborne planned to be married but decided to postpone. And Solomon’s sister said that her brother and Claiborne quarreled over finances last weekend.

Cynthia Solomon said her brother and Claiborne had argued because they were worried about how they would pay their rent and were concerned that they could be evicted from their apartment. She said both had called her Saturday while they were arguing.

Solomon said the last time she saw her brother was when she talked to him at her house in Prince George County on Sunday.

"I was trying to ask him what was going on. It was like he was stresed out," she said.

"But he wouldn’t tell me what was going on."

Solomon said her mother last saw him on Tuesday when he went to Hopewell to cut her lawn.

"She said he was in a good mood. He was OK."

David Anthony Blake, who lives next door to Solomon’s mother in Hopewell, said he has known Solomon for 15 years and described him as a "caring person" with a "caring heart."

Blake said he doesn’t believe anything bad has happened to Claiborne.

"I hope nothing happened to her, tiffany rings," he said.

Claiborne’s son, 2-year-old Malik, was found 11:30 p.m. Tuesday standing on a truck bumper in a parking lot the Addison at Swift Creek apartments in Chesterfield. He was unharmed and reported to be doing well yesteray under the care of Child Protective Services.

Traffic scuffle stems from earlier domestic fight

Uncategorized

A driver who hit a bicyclist Thursday afternoon and sent him tumbling into the grass turned out to be the rider’s girlfriend, who had been heckling him down 10th Street for several minutes before steering her car onto the sidewalk in his path, according to witnesses.

The traffic accident turned domestic disturbance occurred at the John Hinkle Place intersection around 5 p.m., Bloomington police Lt. David Drake said. No one was injured.

Both the man and woman are considered victims on the police report, yet both were arrested.

April D. Lepine, tiffany money clips, 46, faces charges of domestic battery, criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say Lepine used her 1994 white Pontiac Grand Am to knock her boyfriend off his bicycle.

Her boyfriend, Robert Hoyer, tiffany necklaces, 47, also faces a domestic battery charge because Lepine told police he grabbed her neck and left red marks during an argument earlier in the day.

Hoyer told police his girlfriend punched him in the face during that argument while her 13-year-old son watched. He had no visible injuries from the punching or the crash, tiffany earrings, according to a report.

The couple is listed at the address 3026 E. Amy Lane. Both remained at Monroe County Jail Friday evening, each on $2,000 surety bond, $500 cash.

From 300 wins to 3,000 hits, there’s poetry and po

Uncategorized

There’s poetry in a round number.

Think, for instance, of the moment when your odo-meter rolls over to 50,000 or 100,000; do you pull over to admire it?

Those fleeting, precise figures command a singular fascination. Not a bit under, not a bit over — exact. And then, before you know it, they’re usually gone.

There is the perfect 10, the 100th anniversary, the 5,000th friend and the 1,000,000th served. Editors even assign 1,000-word stories.

And then there is sports.

In a culture that is numbers obsessed, fans throw around terms like 1,000-yard rusher or 100-RBI man all the time, but rarely do they mean that someone actually hit those statistical markers right on the nose. Usually athletes reach that milestone and then add on.

But a glance across the four major sports shows there are those rare times when players, for better or worse, didn’t make it any farther.

Perhaps the most well-known is also the most somber — Roberto Clemente’s 3,000 hits.

Following the 1972 season, Clemente boarded an airplane bound for Nicaragua. He was part of the relief effort to aid victims of an earthquake. But moments after the plane took off, it crashed, killing Clemente and the other crew and passengers aboard.

Clemente’s impact on baseball went beyond his statistical prowess, but he never got a chance to advance past 3,000 hits when he died at the age of 38.

Of the major sports, baseball tends to draw the nerd — er, most cerebral fans, and baseball has an abundance of statistics to satisfy their geekiness, in a variety of categories. Rickey Henderson had 100 stolen bases in 1980. Darryl Strawberry finished his career with 1,000 RBI. Ellis Burks played in exactly 2,tiffany necklaces,000 games. Bruce Sutter is 21st all time with 300 saves. Jim Bunning allowed 1,000 walks in his career.

Jeffrey Leonard and former Cub Shawon Dunston struck out 1,000 times. Leonard, who finished his career in Seattle, struck out in the fifth inning of his final game, which marked his last at-bat. He was replaced in the field before his next turn in the lineup and he never played again.

Nobody has exactly 500 home runs. Chuck Klein, however, finished with 300.

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is within one home run of joining the 600 club. But as with a car’s odometer, this will likely be just a transitory figure. That doesn’t mean it will be easy for him to hit No. 601. After Rodriguez hit No. 500, it took him nine games to hit the next one, and over those nine games, he hit .107.

For pitchers, 300 wins usually means automatic Hall of Fame entry. Both Lefty Grove and Early Wynn have 300 exactly.

A former White Sox player and broadcaster, Wynn struggled for his milestone, failing to achieve it in seven starts over nine months, the longest period ever between a pitcher’s 299th and 300th win. Finally, in 1963, pitching for the Indians at age 43, he pitched only five innings but got the win over the Kansas City A’s. "I was exhausted," he reportedly said.

In basketball, Wilt Chamberlain has the sport’s most notable round number, with the 100 points he scored in 1962. He hit 36 of 63 field goals and 28 of 32 free throws to do it. It took a minor miracle for Chamberlain to hit that many free throws, considering his lifetime percentage is just a shade over 51 percent.

But after that, basketball fails to produce many scintillating round numbers.

Walt Bellamy once had 1,500 rebounds in the 1961-62 season for the Chicago Packers. Danny Manning finished with 1,000 steals, while Shaquille O’Neal, if he retired today, would finish his career with 3,000 assists.

As for the NHL, the late Bob Probert, tiffany bracelets, a former Blackhawk, sat for 3,300 minutes in the penalty box, fifth most all-time in the NHL. Lanny McDonald had 500 goals, but after that, no hockey stats of significance ended in a couple zeroes.

The NFL, meanwhile, yields more interesting cases. Franco Harris and Curtis Martin both finished their careers with exactly 100 touchdowns. Two quarterbacks, the Bears’ Jim McMahon and Washington’s Doug Williams, each threw for 100, but that pales in comparison to Denver’s John Elway, who had 300 when he retired. In 1986, Minnesota quarterback Tommy Kramer earned a Pro Bowl spot and the comeback player of the year award for his 3,000-yard performance, the only time an NFL quarterback threw for that in a single season. No receiver has had exactly 1,000 yards, but Marcus Robinson did have 1,400 for the Bears in 1999. Hall of Famer Barry Sanders did have the NFL’s lone 1,500-yard rushing season. Willie Ellison in 1971,tiffany earrings, Mercury Morris in 1972 — in Miami’s perfect season — Greg Pruitt in 1976 and Ricky Williams in 2000 rushed for exactly 1,tiffany cuff Links,000.

So why can’t you say someone who rushed for 998 yards is also a 1,000-yard rusher? Well, try telling that to anyone who missed out on an incentive bonus in his contract for falling just short of that mark. And try telling that to former Falcons running back Dave Hampton.

In the final game of the 1972 season, Hampton reached 1,000 yards in the fourth quarter. But on his next carry, he slipped and lost yardage, putting him back at 995. Even though there was plenty of time left in the game, a long scoring drive by Kansas City put the Chiefs ahead late, forcing Atlanta to throw to catch up. Hampton didn’t carry again that game.

Then in 1973, fate tormented Hampton again — he finished with 997 yards. After an injury-riddled 1974 campaign, Hampton entered the fourth quarter of the final contest in the 1975 season needing 28 yards to reach 1,000. Even with the Falcons trailing, Atlanta coach Marion Campbell gave Hampton the ball. He got 30 yards on three carries and was immediately removed with 1,002 yards. It was the only season Hampton could call himself a 1,000-yard rusher — but not if we’re exact.
